The Truth About Insurance Claims

"If my contractor's price is less, do I get to keep the extra money?"

NO. Insurance companies have processes to prevent this. They withhold what's called 'recoverable depreciation.' To get that money, the final invoice must match the insurance scope. If you paid less, the insurance company simply keeps the difference. Using a cheap contractor saves the insurance company money, NOT you.

"Should I share my insurance scope with my contractor?"

YES. An experienced contractor will review it to ensure all damaged items are included and priced correctly. Insurance companies request you share this so we can all work together before work begins. We work for YOU, not the insurance company.

"Will filing a claim raise my rates?"

By law, an insurer cannot raise your individual rates for a weather-related event. Rates are set geographically. Your rates might go up because your whole area got hit by storms, but NOT because you personally filed a claim.
